Ethos of High View

The ethos of the home is underpinned by the organisations model of care. The staff team are committed to the young people who live at High View to ensure that they achieve their full potential. Holistic individualised child focussed packages of care are evolved for the young people in conjunction with NSCAP and all professionals who are involved with the young people. High View provides a nurturing environment which supports the young people to achieve a sense of permanency.

Age of Young People

High View can accommodate young people of any age; however normally they are between 8 and 18 years old. The admission process is robust and includes the completion of a shared living risk assessment, which allows the young people’s needs to be carefully matched with co-residents, including age, specific needs and stage of emotional development to ensure that this placement is in the best interests of all young people.

At High View we prefer planned placements as this gives new young people the opportunity to visit the home, meet the staff team and the other young people prior to them moving in. However, we recognise that there may be occasions where emergency placements may be required, and we are sometimes in a position to offer this. This decision would only be made after consideration of the suitability of the young person being referred. It would be expected that a review would take place within 7 working days of the young person’s admission in the case of a planned move to ascertain whether it is in the young person’s best interests to remain at this home or to move onto a different placement. In the case of an emergency admission, the review should never take place more than 72 hours after admission.

Facilities

High View is a three bedroom detached house with large rear and front gardens, both ideal for outdoor activities and summer BBQ’s. The ground floor consists of a staff office, laundry room, toilet, kitchen, dining and living area. There is space within the home to carry out homework and to make private telephone calls etc. .

The first floor comprises of two bedrooms for young people, a staff sleep room and a bathroom with bath and shower facilities.

Highview strives to create and maintain a homely environment for the young people to feel safe and secure. The daily routine of the home is centred around the needs of the young people. This is achieved by encouraging the young people to personalise their surroundings by actively involving them in choosing décor and furnishings for the home and personalising their own bedroom. The young people receive an allowance when they first move into the home so that they can purchase items of their choice to personalise their bedrooms. All shared areas of the home are accessible to young people. In the interest of confidentiality young people do not have access to the staff office.

Team meetings are regular and focus on the right things. They offer staff the opportunity to explore their professional curiosity, reflect and share ideas about the children… The staff work as an effective team to help children achieve their goals.

Children are making tremendous progress relative to their starting points. Children put roots down and want to stay until they reach independence. They say that they see their future living at this home. This is testament to the stability of the staff team and the close relationships that have developed between staff and the children. Children who leave the home are well prepared and move on with confidence.

Children receive exceptional care from a dedicated and committed staff team. They have a well-planned and warm welcome when they move into the home, and this helps them to settle quickly and feel an immediate sense of belonging.

Professional feedback is really positive. This stems from the point when a child comes to live at the home to their transition into independence and adulthood. There is evidence of excellent partnership working that contributes to the support and progress that the children have made in all aspects of their lives.

Staff know how to engage with the children, listen to them and help them to share any anxieties, worries or concerns they may have. Creative ways and different approaches to improving children’s mental health and well-being are being achieved. Children enjoy horse riding, going to the gym and have active lifestyles that keep them busy and healthy.

The children are making progress in their education. The manager has worked tirelessly with virtual schools to identify the right resource. Equally, the children have been given support and guidance around vocational learning and employment that has given the children the confidence to apply for jobs, attend interviews and adapt to the world of work.

Ofsted, 2022

The home environment is very warm and welcoming. Children are encouraged to help plan and decorate their home. One child has designed a feature wall in her bedroom and in the lounge. The children keep journals that give them lasting memories, and photos adorn the walls reminding them of all their escapades and fun times.

Ofsted, 2022

Staff use a very calming approach to managing negative behaviour, and they are adept at unpicking with children what the core problem is. Staff listen to the children, but are consistent in implementing rules and boundaries around acceptable behaviour. This means that the use of restraint to manage behaviour is a rarity.

Our Approach

Consultation with young people is at the heart of all the work we do and the decisions we make about the child’s life are made with their involvement. We provide a nurturing and supportive environment which engages positively with young people and makes every effort to involve the wider system around them to ensure their needs are met.

We work hard to build constructive and warm relationships with young people and have a strong culture surrounding safeguarding issues where staff feel empowered and confident in risk management.
